In a social media post, Yuji Horii commented regarding the status of Dragon Quest XII. He believes that the newest entry to the long-running series will serve to honor the memory and legacy of those who worked on the first game.
The Dragon Quest PR Horii commented on is one announcing that May 26, 2024 was the 38th anniversary of the initial Dragon Quest release. It’s also considered Dragon Quest Day in Japan. The post includes screenshots of the first game, as well as notes that the game popularized the RPG genre in Japan.
Here is Yuji Horii’s tweet, which he shared as a quote reply:
Thank you to the many people who congratulated us on this milestone. I’m sure everyone is worried about Dragon Quest XII right now, but to tell the truth, I was just in a meeting about it. I still can’t provide many details, but I believe that it will be a fitting tribute to the two who passed away. I’ll do my best!
The “two who passed away” in Horii’s message are likely Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama. They, along with Horii, were the ones who created Dragon Quest together. Akira Toriyama was the character designer, as well as the author of Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball. He passed away on March 1, 2024. Koichi Sugiyama was the musical composer for the series. He passed away on September 30, 2021. Both Toriyama and Sugiyama were working on this upcoming Dragon Quest game until their deaths.
Dragon Quest XII is currently in development for as yet unspecified platforms.
