There might be a chance for Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI to meet, according to Producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida. A recent interview from Saturday revealed that Yoshida “really wants” to implement an FFXVI and FFXIV crossover of some kind. [Thanks, Umadori0726!]
The original interview took place on the Chinese news site HK01. According to Umadori’s translation of the interview, the interviewer asked Yoshida, who works as producer on Final Fantasy XVI, whether there was a chance of a crossover between FFXVI and FFXIV at some point after XVI‘s release.
Yoshida responded:
As the producer of FF16, of course I really want to do [a collaboration]. FF14 has a huge player base, and being able to bring FF16 to FF14 players would be ideal. But that’s not a matter I can decide all on my own. I’d need to discuss it with the Producer of FF14. It just so happens that the Producer and Director of FF14 has the surname “Yoshida,” so I’ll check with him. If he says ‘yes’, then it might really happen.”
Given that Naoki Yoshida is the producer of both Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI, this is a cheeky way of affirming his desire for a cross-promotion, but stopping short of confirming it in detail.
Final Fantasy XIV has a long history of crossovers with other properties, Final Fantasy-related and otherwise. Much of its content includes in-depth references and adaptations of other Final Fantasy concepts, settings, and even characters. One promotion involved Final Fantasy XV, the most recent mainline FF game. Players encountered FFXV protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum, and received a copy of his outfit for their glamours, as well as a version of the Regalia, Noctis’ personal vehicle, as a rideable mount.
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC, PS4, and PS5. Final Fantasy XVI will launch on June 22, 2023 for the PlayStation 5.
