There would be no Halo, no Call of Duty, no Battlefield, and certainly no Titanfall if not for the actions of the brave and few long ago. Now, it’s time for one of them to return to us in the form of Wolfenstien: The New Order.
This is going to be interesting to keep an eye on, primarily because most of those who would remember the early games in the series fondly are now playing first-person shooters which have evolved dramatically in the past two decades. Also, this one has big, hulking mechs. That you can ride in.
For a series not exactly renowned for storytelling—it’s about players being B. J. Blazkowitz and blowing the living hell out of every Nazi around, generally—it seems the story of New Order will pick up in the in-game year of 1960, with Blazkowitz suffering amnesia.
That’s speculation, but it’s speculation stemming from careful understanding of the ending of the last game’s escape of big bad General Wilhelm “Deathshead” Strausse and his re-appearance in The New Order at the head of a robot army. That robot army is what swung World War II in Nazi Germany’s favor, eventually granting them full world domination and the completion of the Third Reich. We’re not going to have any of that, though, now that we’re back.
What gameplay we can glean from the decently-long trailer shows off the same fast and frantic firefights that were once a staple of the first-person genre, including the ability to duel wield guns and climb into the hulks themselves. There are cybernetic and even fully-robotic canines as well as troops to fight, a sign the Nazi’s have somehow gained a lead in the race for technology, and a sign of some really cool fights.
What we really want to know though is if The New Order will bring back the amazingly awesome, and still very cool Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory multiplayer features, and if we’ll ever see Mecha-Hitler again.
We’ll find out soon enough, as Wolfenstein: The New Order begins May 20th in the US and May 23rd in Europe on PC, PlayStation 3 and 4, and Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
