Rodea the Sky Soldier is developed by Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka. Naka originally teased the game’s existence in an interview with Siliconera all the way back in 2011. Following this, Famitsu reported that the game was in development for the Wii.

Days later, Kadokawa Games announced that they were publishing the game for both the Wii and Nintendo 3DS. At some point, Kadokawa ceased talking about Rodea—likely because the Wii software market was no longer healthy enough to make the game’s release worth their while. Then, last November, they revealed that the game was still alive, and was now coming to the 3DS and Wii U.

In case you’re wondering, the Wii version of Rodea includes a competitive multiplayer mode, which isn’t in either the Wii U or 3DS releases, which actually does make it something of a worthwhile collectible. In Japan, the Wii version is being included with first-print copies of the Wii U version, so NIS America’s scheme is identical to the one Kadokawa are employing in Japan.

Rodea the Sky Soldier will be released in North America this Fall.
