Nintendo’s new Wii U console sold more than 460,000 units in the U.S. during the month of December, the company has reported. Total sales in the U.S. are now at 890,000 units after 41 days on the market.
Wii U’s December hardware look a little on the low side, given that the system sold 400,000 units in launch week alone, and that the Xbox 360 sold over 1.4 million units in December. Differences in pricing and the two consoles’ library of games explain the difference in sales figures, but Nintendo will need to release convincing software in the months to come, if they hope for sales to grow or even remain steady.
Nintendo also reported that sales of New Super Mario Bros. U are at 580,000 units in the U.S., which reflects an attach rate of over 65%.
Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS sold 1.25 million units in December and has crossed 7.7 million units sold to date in the U.S. region. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the fourth Nintendo 3DS game to have crossed the 1 million mark in the U.S., and is now at over 1.45 million units sold in that region.
Nintendo’s older systems are chugging along, too. The Wii sold nearly 475,000 units during December, while the Nintendo DS sold nearly 470,000 units.
