Even those unfamiliar with or new to the VTuber scene have likely heard of Hololive’s Gawr Gura. The diminutive shark girl currently boasts over 4 million YouTube subscribers and appeared in mobile games and even briefly in a Taco Bell commercial. But for those who want to know more, here’s the rundown on the Hololive VTuber, Gawr Gura.
Originally debuting in 2020 as part of Hololive’s first EN generation Myth, she was joined by Mori Calliope, Amelia Watson, Ninomae Ina’nis and Takanashi Kiara. Just a month after debut she reached a million subscribers, becoming the first English-language VTuber to do so. Eventually, she even surpassed industry pioneer Kizuna Ai in subscriber count. In late 2022 Gura announced a health-related break and although she has returned to active streaming, her schedule is more sporadic.
She quickly became known for her singing, performing multiple karaoke streams and releasing two original songs. “Reflect” and “[Q].” The latter of which was a collaboration with gen-mate Calliope Mori and music producer DECO*27. Her passion for rhythm games also resulted in official collaborations with Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party and Bang Dream! Girls Band Party. Horror games and Minecraft collaborations also appear frequently on her channel, along with one-off streams of a variety of games like Fifa 23 or Fortnite.
Gura’s original VTuber model was drawn by Amashiro Natsuki, who herself streams under the name Nachoneko. Gura has since gained three more outfits drawn by Amashiro: a casual outfit with cat ears, an atlantean dress and a new year’s kimono. Her official 3D model debuted alongside her appearance in Hololive’s animated skit series, Holo no Graffiti. Before that she made use of both a 2D and 3D model designed by community artist Walfie.
