White Night Is An Homage To The Original Alone In The Dark

Osome Studio’s survival horror game White Night doesn’t look much like other games, at least, stylistically. The chiaroscuro and distorted camera angles are more in line with expressionist cinema and hardboiled film noir.

Unsurprisingly, those types of cinema and their literature origins are where the studio takes a lot of its visual references from. But, Osome says that White Night is also an homage to the original Alone In The Dark.

As such, it’s an old school survival horror, in which you’re invited to “live the nightmare of a man, hurt and trapped in an old family manor where darkness is a constant threat.”

In the game, the stark black and white contrast is more than pure style. It’s also the foundations of the game’s horror and its puzzle design. Simply put: darkness will consume you if you linger in it for too long, so seeking out light sources becomes your primary motivation to move through the manor.

Osome hopes that White Night will blend its many influences into a compelling, and sometimes haunting, concoction, as a unique experience in art, storytelling, and game design.

It’ll be coming to Windows, Mac, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 whenever it’s finished. Find out more about it on its website.
