After six years of operations, DC recently closed down their CMX manga imprint, leaving fans wondering what would happen to the licenses they’d acquired and what publishers they might end up with.

In an interview with ICv2, DC co-publisher, Jim Lee, dropped some hints as to what might be in store for CMX’s acquisitions. He begins by explaining that part of the reason CMX went out of business was due to the difficulties of obtaining licenses and the lengthy negotiating process.

“We had put in a number of good years trying to make a real concerted effort to be in that business. It’s difficult because the licenses, the key licenses, are not easy to obtain. It’s a very long negotiating process where you have to work with lesser-known titles and work your way up to the key licenses. That hurt us from the get-go.”

Lee then goes on to talk about the fate of all those CMX-licensed series.

“We’ve actually had interest from a couple of other creative studios that were interested in taking over the role on a couple of books. We’re talking to them. Right now I assume they’re going to revert back to the publishers and they’ll figure it out. I think Dark Horse had expressed interest…”

Dark Horse have been expressing some interest in branching out. As MangaBlog notes, Dark Horse posted a message to their Facebook page, thanking fans for their support and asking their readers what they’d like to see next.

Which of CMX’s licenses would you like to see picked up?
