In Polygon’s latest entry in their “Devs Make Mario” series, Grand Kingdom creator Tomohiko Deguchi takes a turn at creating his own level in Super Mario Maker for the Wii U.

“For the level I made in Mario Maker, my first decision was to use the Koopa Troopas as the thematic element. After that, I thought about different ways to have fun with the Koopa Troopas,” Deguchi explained. “My goal was to have variations on those goals in each scroll of the map, so that there’d be at least one point of interest in every screen.”

To hear more about Deguchi’s design process, and to watch a playthrough of his completed level, you can watch the video below. Additionally, his course is available on the Super Mario Maker official bookmark site.
