While the Mortal Kombat buzz is still in the air, following the release of the Rebirth short, Warner Bros. have an announcement of their own to make with regard to the franchise: that they’re — surprise! — developing a new game in the series.

This latest entry, simply titled Mortal Kombat, is being handled by the original MK Midway studio in Chicago, still led by franchise co-creator Ed Boon. Now renamed NetherRealm Studios, the team is hard at work, in preparation for a 2011 release. WB were keen to point out the added focus on the game’s story mode, which they claim will be the “deepest” of any fighting game yet.

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!” By gruesome, Boon means Kung Lao using his hat like a buzzsaw, as seen in this teaser trailer.
