Flame on! Or off, as the case may be with Laughing Jackal’s latest news on fire-fighting roguelike Flame Over. This is their first Unity and 3D game that will appear on the PlayStation Vita.

The game went silent after its initial reveal last August, but Laughing Jackal noted that they’ve been hard at work since then improving the graphics and performance of the game.

Firefighter Blaze Carruthers has to save lives and put out raging fires in a roguelike, randomly-generated office building of Infernal Industries in London. Yes, there’s permadeath if you do things wrong, including opening a door where a backdraft can occur or letting a fire turn into an unstoppable inferno. The fires are raging uncontrollably, and will spread to more burnable materials given time. It’s your job to race against time and put them out while rescuing trapped workers and their feline companions. The game can be controlled with the twin sticks of the Vita.

There are four different zones to progress through that will feature their own hazards and features to stymie or help players. You can also spend loot earned from saving people on better powerups. Looking at the screenshots, I’m kind of reminded of The Firemen, an amazing SNES and PlayStation top-down sidescroller where players were also firefighters battling flames rather than beating up ghouls’n’goblins. For a comparison video between Flame Over’s screenshots and The Firemen, you can check out this YouTube video of the SNES game.

Flame Over is currently set for a second-half-of-2014 release on the PlayStation Vita.
