Monochrome Mobius, a new JRPG set in the same world as the Utawarerumono series, will debut globally. The announcement comes from publisher Shiravune, which is working with developer Aquaplus on the game. Previous Utawarerumono titles waited months or even years between their Japanese releases and their eventual overseas localizations. By contrast, Shiravune is targeting a day-and-date global PC release on September 8, 2022. The Shiravune release will support English, Chinese, and Japanese language options.
Shiravune also uploaded a localized trailer for the game. Its formal title is Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten.
Chronologically, Monochrome Mobius is a prequel of sorts to Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception. It stars Oshtor, a major character from Mask of Deception, and focuses on his adventures before becoming the General of the Right in the empire of Yamato. In addition, younger versions of Oshtor’s friends Mikazuchi and Munechika (also characters from Mask of Deception) both make appearances as playable party members. Even Nekone, Oshtor’s little sister, shows up, though she’s much younger than in Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth. The story takes place in and around Oshtor’s homeland of Ennakamuy. Oshtor is tasked to investigate some mysterious phenomena, and in so doing meets a mysterious girl, Shunya. Shunya informs him that his father, long thought missing, is still alive. Oshtor then sets off on a quest to find his father, and the truth, in a land at the end of the world: Arva Shulan.
The game itself will be structured more along the lines of a traditional JRPG, rather than the combination visual novel/tactical RPG genre of mainline Utawarerumono titles. It’ll have field exploration, turn-based battles with a small party, and character progression elements.
Aquaplus also re-uploaded previously teased gameplay footage, as well as the Monochrome Mobius prologue and its animated opening.

Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten will release on PC, PS4, and PS5 in Japan on September 8, 2022. It will release outside Japan with English, Japanese, and Chinese-language support on PC on the same day. Previous games in the Utawarerumono franchise are available on PS4 and PC.
