Unicorn Overlord Switch performance vs Xbox and PlayStation 5

Before we dive into this comparison, let me get one thing out of the way. Unicorn Overlord‘sSwitch performance is excellent and has very few drawbacks. If you just want a quick answer, then absolutely it’s worth purchasing on the Nintendo handheld. However, if you are still curious about the differences between how Unicorn Overlord plays on Switch vs Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, we’ve got you covered.

Below is a breakdown of the general differences you can expect between Unicorn Overlord on Switch vs PlayStation 5 and Xbox:

  • Nintendo Switch: Gorgeous colors on Switch OLED, solid framerate, slightly slower load times, and lower resolution.
  • Xbox Series X: 4k resolution, crisp animations, slightly faster load times.
  • PlayStation 5: 4k resolution, crisp animations, slightly faster load times.

Do the differences seem minimal? That’s because they are! The bottom line is that Unicorn Overlord on PS5 and Xbox has the benefit of 4k resolution output, which results in cleaner graphics. However, while Unicorn Overlord on Switch has lower resolutions, it also doesn’t look blurry or muddy. Looking back and forth between the two versions, I genuinely felt the resolution differences were minimal, specifically because of Vanillaware’s gorgeous 2D art style, which remains relatively the same across all platforms.

Players who buy Unicorn Overlord on Switch won’t have to worry about background images being toned down or objects missing. When put side by side, all game versions look identical, minus the resolution differences. The other benefit of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is faster loading times. But again, after playing a few hours on the Switch, I rarely felt like the game wasn’t loading fast enough. So again, this difference is pretty minimal.

Should you buy Unicorn Overlord on Switch?

Overall, I recommend you buy Unicorn Overlord on the Nintendo Switch, with one caveat. If you have the Nintendo Switch OLED, I actually think this is the best version of Unicorn Overlord. Vanillware’s beautiful 2D art style pops off the screen with the improved color saturation. However, if you own a PS5 or Xbox and an OLED TV, then the advantages of the Switch become a bit less special.

At that point, it just comes down to whether you value portability. And again, in my humble opinion, I actually think Unicorn Overlord‘s tactical gameplay is perfect for the portable experience. Lastly, if you don’t have the Switch OLED or own any other consoles, you should also not panic. While the OLED version has a clear advantage, you will still be able to enjoy Unicorn Overlord on the Switch with minimal compromises. The Unicorn Overlord PC release has not yet been announced either, making Switch the best way to play it on the go (sorry, Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally players – hopefully in the future!)

Because of the game’s strategy-based combat and 2D art style, there is also no big difference between the frame rates of each version of Unicorn Overlord. So, while technically, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are superior, Vanillaware really delivered a perfect port to the Nintendo Switch.

Unicorn Overlord is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, and Nintendo Switch.
