UMD far from dead? MTV backs PSP video discs

umd.jpgIt seems like most retail outlets are having UMD fire sales, but MTV believes the format is far from extinction. A handful of their TV programs (read: not music videos) will be sold on UMD for $14.99. The initial list includes:

Recommended Videos

"Beavis & Butt-head: The Mike Judge Collection," Vol. 2 and 3

"Jackass," Vol. 2 and 3

"Wildboyz," Vol. 1 and 2

"Viva La Bam," Vol. 2, 3, and 4

"Aeon Flux: The Complete Animated Collection" (2-disc set)

Unlike UMD movies some of these collections are reasonably priced. Let’s take Aeon Flux as an example. The DVD box set costs around $30, but you can get a low frills version with fewer extras (? This isn't confirmed, but  I'm guessing something has to be cut to trim the content down.) for about half price. Interestingly, the DVD version is three discs, but somehow MTV crammed the whole series on two UMDs. Aren’t UMDs smaller too? I wonder just how compressed Aeon Flux is…
