Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Sales Slower Than Super Street Fighter IV

Capcom have published reports for the third quarter (October – December period of their ongoing fiscal year. Mentioned therein are sales figures for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, released this past November for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 sold 600,000 copies worldwide across both platforms in two months. While that’s a good number, Capcom USA feel the game could have done better, especially when compared to sales of Super Street Fighter IV.

SSFIV sold more in the same window. UMVC3 I would expect to have long legs,” shares Capcom senior vice-president, Christian Svensson. “We ship a more every week and the North American market is the lion’s share of the [worldwide] volume.”

Svensson added: “That said, I’m a little bummed we aren’t on track to beat SSFIV. I had hoped the attractive price coupled with the Marvel brand during the holiday launch period would have broke us out more broadly. Don’t get me wrong, we didn’t do badly, but I still think the game deserves more, as good as it is.”

The trend of slow holiday sales wasn’t unique to Capcom alone. Software sales in December were down across the board in North America, dropping 14% from December 2010. Videogame sales including hardware, software and accessories were down 21%.
