The statement starts with a brief summary of Toys For Bob’s previous work on games like the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot franchises. It then states that it wishes to take this time to return to “being a small and nimble studio.” Aside from announcing that it has gone indie, the Toys For Bob statement also adds that it is exploring a possible partnership with Microsoft. It’s not working on any games right now, but it’s excited to develop new stories and characters. According to the statement, the team will still maintain the same enthusiasm and passion on its new journey.

Toys For Bob is a developer founded in 1989. It was a subsidiary of Activision from 2005 onwards, until now. It created the Star Control and Skylanders franchises, with Star Control II considered one of the greatest games of all time.

This news comes at a time of great upheaval in the video game industry. Earlier this year, in January 2024, Microsoft announced that it will lay off 1900 Activision, Blizzard, and Xbox staff. Sega of America also announced a lay off of around 60 employees, and EA announced that it will lay off around 670 employees.

Toys For Bob has gone indie and so far, it is not working on any current projects.
