It’s worth pointing out, with Nintendo DS sales dropping and no new major releases on the horizon, it’s possible we’ll hear news of a DS successor this year.
In terms of software, the week of Feb 22 – 28 was extremely interesting sales-wise. Japan saw the release of a long queue of relatively low-profile releases, the large majority of which were portable. Publisher Spike had a decent week with Kenka Bancho 4 and Shiren the Wanderer 4 both debuting in the top-ten chart. Meanwhile, it would appear boobs spelt certain success for the new Super Robot Taisen OG Saga, which, along with God Eater, gave Namco Bandai a two-game presence in the top-ten as well.
Following is the top-ten chart for the week of Feb 22 – 28. More sales tidbits after the chart (as always, do note all sales information outside of the top-ten is an approximation):
LW | TW | Title | Tw sales | Tot. sales | Sys. | Publisher |
New | 01. | Kenka Bancho 4: The One Year War | 71,504 | New | PSP | Spike |
New | 02. | Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier Exceed | 64,805 | New | DS | Namco Bandai |
01. | 03. | Resident Evil 5: Alternate Edition | 47,815 | 191,154 | PS3 | Capcom |
03. | 04. | New Super Mario Bros. Wii | 45,369 | 3,411,665 | Wii | Nintendo |
02. | 05. | God Eater | 44,717 | 514,549 | PSP | Namco Bandai |
New | 06. | Hot Shots Tennis | 44,603 | New | PSP | SCE |
New | 07. | Shiren the Wanderer 4 | 40,703 | New | DS | Spike |
05. | 08. | Tomodachi Collection | 33,325 | 2,881,991 | DS | Nintendo |
07. | 09. | Wii Fit Plus | 29,787 | 1,694,292 | Wii | Nintendo |
04. | 10. | Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie | 26,474 | 1,243,608 | DS | Square Enix |
Also of interest were some other new releases for the week, namely Borderlands for the 360 (15,400) and Estpolis: The Lands Cursed by the Gods for DS (11,700). Not quite a remarkable showing for Estopolis. Joining them was BlazBlue Portable, which managed 13,100 units. That BlazBlue number was rather surprising, so we dug up info on the debut of the console versions, for the sake of comparison:
BlazBlue (PS3) – 33,768 (46,000 approx. to date)
BlazBlue (360) – 24,812 (33,000 approx. to date)
Faring worse than all of these, however, were Shounen Oni Ninden Tsumuji — a DS game developed specifically for Japan by Electronic Arts — and Jaleco’s WizMan’s World, both of which weren’t on the charts. The latter reportedly sold 2,374 of the 4,883 units that were shipped to retail. That’s around 2,000 2ch posters that probably bought the game.
The week also saw the release of the first batch of the Everyone’s Recommendation Selection budget re-releases on Wii. Here are the numbers available to us on that front. Keep in mind these are approximations, and not 100% accurate:
(ERS) Muramasa: The Demon Blade – 6,700
(ERS) One Piece Unlimited Cruise: Episode 1 – 8,300
Unfortunately, no numbers are available as of now for (ERS) Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and (ERS) 428: Fuusasareta Shibuya de, but both games charted at the bottom of the overall list for the week. Speaking of bottom, that’s also where Cross†Channel for the PSP debuted at around 4,500 units.
