<< How to read and understand sales
Note: This column is a couple of days late due to the E3 flood. Next week, we’ll be back to our usual Wednesday schedule. On the bright side, we have some sell-through data due to the delay this week.
Last week, Nintendo released Rhythm Heaven The Best+ in Japan. This is a 3DS game that re-uses content from previous Rhythm Heaven titles, but that didn’t stop it from selling incredibly well. The game sold 157,591 copies in its first week, and Japanese sales tracker Media Create reports it saw a sell-through of 81.56%.
While Rhythm Heaven topped the software sales charts, the #2 spot went to Bandai Namco and Arc System Works’ Dragon Ball Z fighting game, Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden, for the Nintendo 3DS. The game sold 74,660 copies at launch, which is very impressive, considering Dragon Ball Xenoverse sold about the same amount at launch and likely cost a whole lot more to develop.
Of course, Xenoverse did manage to ship 2 million copies worldwide, since it’s the first major console Dragon Ball game in a while. That said, Bandai Namco have smartly chosen to release Extreme Butoden a month prior to the new Dragon Ball Super anime, so one wouldn’t be too surprised if the game were to make a comeback in July.
Finally, at #3 was Splatoon, which is still going fairly strong in its third week. Splatoon sold 53,198 copies last week, and it’s holding Wii U sales up much higher than usual as well. We’re curious to see just how long this lasts, since the Wii U lineup looks rather sparse over the next few months. Something else that should be interesting to see is if Nintendo decide to try something with Splatoon on 3DS to expose the franchise to a larger userbase.
