Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan last week, and the game saw fantastic first-week sales of 603,064 copies. That’s a higher debut than Animal Crossing: Wild World on the Nintendo DS (325,466 first week) and Animal Crossing: City Folk on the Wii (305,180 first week).

The interesting part is that sales tracker, Media Create, who we source for these sales figures, don’t give the complete picture when it comes to Animal Crossing: New Leaf sales. For instance, yesterday, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, reported that Animal Crossing sold through 600,000 retail copies and was also purchased digitally as a download title over 200,000 times.

Even counting just retail sales, this makes Animal Crossing: New Leaf the Nintendo 3DS game with the highest first-week sales so far, beating out Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and New Super Mario Bros. 2. It looks like 3DS has its killer app in Japan.
