Last week in Japan, things are starting to cool down in hardware and software sales but that didn’t stop the release of two big-hitters in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of January 7 to January 13, 2019.
After taking up the top spot for four weeks straight since launch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has finally been dethroned from the #1 which went to none other than New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 166,303 units sold for Switch in its debut. As for Smash, it charted at #2 with 62,580 units sold.
The next new title of the week, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition charted at #3 and #4 with the PS4 version selling much more with 41,510 units followed by the Switch version with 26,588 units sold in its debut. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition combined for a total of 68,098 units in its debut. A main Tales of game can easily clear the 200k~300k debut, but that’s about expected for the Tales of Vesperia remaster.
At #5 we have Dragon Quest Builders 2 for Switch with 19,565 units sold. The PS4 version sold 17,931 units in the week to chart at #7. And between them is Super Mario Party that appears to be dropping a bit after partying in the #2 spot for a couple weeks.
In hardware sales, there’s been a noticeable drop after the holiday spending from earlier this month, with the PS4 selling 12,012 units plus an additional 6,289 units of PS4 Pro consoles to combine for 18,301 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of the week with 78,056 units sold to make up about 75.2% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,124,822 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.
