When it comes to farming, there are no “traditional” animals in the Rune Factory series. Instead, you’ll find monsters in the wild who bear strong resemblances to livestock like sheep. You’ll then need to tame them if you want to own one. There are quite a few different kinds of monsters in Rune Factory 3 Special, and some are best at providing useful merchandise or sorts of support.

Best Rune Factory 3 Special Monsters to Tame for Products

Some of the best Rune Factory 3 Special monsters you’ll know you should recruit on sight, as they resemble traditional farm animals. You’ll want to target them for the products they produce, as you’ll use them for recipes and usually make good money shipping them. Especially since ones like the Wooly produce better quality versions of their items when they like you more.

  • Buffamoo: Don’t let the name fool you. This is a cow. You’ll find them in Privera Forest, and they’re handy for getting milk. I found they’ll also accept both milk and bamboo shoots as gifts. Odds are, one or two of these will be your first tamed monsters.
  • Cluckadoodle: This is basically the chicken of the game. It’s in Oddward Valley, which is a strong area. However, since it first spawns in the first “room” of this area and won’t attack without provocation, you can still tame one fairly early. It likes eggs best, and it also produces eggs.
  • Hornet: You’ll find these bees in Oddward Valley, so you can’t run off and tame them right away. You want them for their honey, as its the most profitable “animal” item you can ship. Coincidentally, you also use honey to tame them.
  • Wooly: You get fleece from a Wooly by using Clippers on it, which is useful for making things and selling. It likes the Wooly Furballs its kind drops as a gift. You’ll be able to start taming these right away, as they’re in Privera Forest.

There are other monsters who, if you tame them, will regularly leave items for you in the barn. Ants will leave you Insect Skin, for example, and you could get Strong String from spiders. Chipsqueeks will leave you fur. While these are good crafting components, you might not need them often enough to merit taming one.

Best Rune Factory 3 Special Monsters to Tame for Other Assistance

If you want, you can focus entirely on taming monsters that produce items. Micah can get really strong, and you could invite other people in town for fighting assistance. However, some other monsters in Rune Factory 3 Special are handy as farm support, mounts, or allies in battle.

I’d say the Silver Wolf is a fun one to get. You can find it at the Vale River. If you tame one, you can ride it like you would a horse. It also can harvest crops or gather wood for you. Plus, it leaves Wolf Fangs for you in the barn. If you want one, give it Wolf Fangs.

You might also want a Tortoise from Oddward Valley. It likes Tortoise Shells. It’s handy, because it can water your crops. You can also ride them. Since it has such high defense, it can be a handy ally.

Both of these monsters are hostile and strong, so take care if you want to befriend one! They won’t be okay with you being around and giving them gifts like a Buffamoo, Cluckadoodle, or Wooly.

Rune Factory 3 Special is available on the Nintendo Switch and PC.
