Yangyang Mobile is looking for $30,000 on Kickstarter to develop its horror visual novel The Letter over the course of a year for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as iOS and Android.
Here’s an overview of its story:
At the heart of Anslem village stands a 17th century English mansion that is rumored to be cursed by a vengeful spirit. Various disappearances had been linked to the mansion, while people living near the vicinity spoke of seeing and hearing unearthly things. Dismissed as a hoax, the mansion was listed for sale by Briar Realty Corporation.
Before its grand opening to the public, Isabella Santos, an agent under BRC, was double-checking the place when she accidentally uncovered a letter that said “HELP ME” over and over again. At the bottom of the letter was the phrase “Send this to 5 people or else…”
The creators of The Letter are inspired by Japanese horror films, such as Ju-On: The Grudge and The Ring, as well as the Korean web-comic Bongcheon-Dong Ghost, and by horror JRPGs including Mad Father and Corpse Party.
What makes The Letter a little different to most other horror visual novels is its incorporation of quick-time events and jump scares. You can see one of the quick-time events in early form below – you need to tap a key fast enough so that the elevator doors close before the ghost attacks.
It’ll also have animated backgrounds, characters, and cutscenes to better bring it all to life. In total, The Letter will have six chapters, each of which are told by a different character, 12 short endings (resulting in life or death) and 5 long-term endings (unlocked based on characters surviving).
