Every few months, someone will ask Sony Worldwide Studios head, Shuhei Yoshida, what’s going on with Team Ico’s next game, The Last Guardian, originally scheduled for release in 2011. This week, it was Eurogamer, during the ongoing Gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Germany.
“The team is still working on it very hard,” Yoshida told Eurogamer when asked about the game. “There are certain technical issues they’ve been working on. That’s the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn’t seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title.”
Yoshida elaborated that these technical issues resulted in the development team having to re-do work on the game that had already been completed.
“We had the game playable,” Yoshida shared. “At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done.”
The Last Guardian is still going to be a PlayStation 3 game, though, Yoshida assures, despite rumours that the PlayStation 4 may see a release next year.
