Usually, players step into the protagonist’s shoes in a Tales of game and watch events unfold. Tales of Xillia 2 gives players choices and in a flash you have to decide which direction to take the story.
"Ludger is the lead character in Tales of Xillia 2 and he is very different from Jude [the male lead in Tales of Xillia]," said Hideo Baba, producer of the Tales series, when speaking with Siliconera. "Players would feel like Jude, but in Tales of Xillia 2 players make decisions and Ludger’s character depends on the player."
Letting players drive the story in Tales of Xillia 2 is a big change and Baba had his heart set on this because he wanted players to feel like a hero.
"In the previous title, players would emphasize with Jude’s feelings. For this game, I would like players to feel like I’m the hero – I’m the lead character," Baba explained. "The easiest way for me to make players feel this way was to implement the decision system."
