Underbite Games began making Super Dungeon Tactics as a video game adaptation of Soda Pop Miniatures’ Super Dungeon Explore table top game. Throughout development, the game’s design has come into its own with a gameplay system that does not simply duplicate its table top inspiration. The game features a full storyline complete with side quests, where the chibi characters go on dungeon-crawling adventures to defeat the dark forces in the land of Crystalia.
As is typical of turn-based tactics games, players meet potential members who may join their guild as they progress through the storyline, and a battle party is chosen from the characters available. Staying true to its table top roots, when it’s time for the battle to begin, a roll of the dice determines the ability types that can be used during each turn. From the dice pool, both the player and the enemy take turns picking which dice rolls they want. Then, they can assign the roll to a desired warrior to unlock their unique abilities for the turn.
Successfully completing battles and quests unlocks additional abilities and upgrade items. As far as level grinding goes, levels are assigned to equipment and other loot items rather than the characters themselves. As your guild grows in number, moving gear around can make it a bit easier to try out new heroes.
Super Dungeon Tactics is expected to launch on Steam in Fall 2016.
