Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director of Nintendo, made a Tweet announcing that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie will air in Japan on April 24, 2026. It is working with Illumination’s team in order to make it a good and fun film.
A Nintendo Direct will air on June 18, 2024 from 7:00 AM PT/10:00 AM ET. However, this pieces of news either could not fit in the stream, or Miyamoto wanted to share it beforehand. There’s not much information on the movie at present. During Mario Day on March 10, 2024, Miyamoto and producer Chris Meledandri announced a second Super Mario Bros movie and that it would air on April 3, 2026 in the United States.
The Super Mario Bros Movie came out in 2023 and is based on the Mario franchise. It starts Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. Serving as a prequel of sorts, it focuses on how Mario and Luigi, two Italian-American plumbers, became the Goomba-stomping, Bowser-thwarting, princess-saving duo they are today. The movie had a budget of $100 million but made $1.362 billion at the box office, becoming the second highest grossing film of 2023 (behind Barbie) and the third highest-grossing animated film of all time (behind Frozen II).
A sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie will come out on April 24, 2026.
