Star Fox 64 3D To Use The Nintendo 3DS Gyro Sensor

Nintendo plan to release Star Fox 64 3D on July 14th in Japan. As with Ocarina of Time 3D, there’s a few surprises in Star Fox 64 3D that weren’t in the original.

While they didn’t go into details, Nintendo mentioned during a recent investor briefing that Star Fox 64 3D will use the Nintendo 3DS’ gyro sensor in an interesting way. This wasn’t apparent in our hands-on with the game, so perhaps Nintendo have updated the controls since then, or added entirely new features to the final game.

The most significant use of the gyro sensor so far has been in Nintendo’s own Steel Diver, a submarine simulator where you move the 3DS from side to side –  along with your upper body, so you don’t lose the 3D image — to control your submarine’s periscope.

Star Fox 64 3D doesn’t have a release date in the U.S. and Europe yet. Nintendo have the game’s release date pegged as “TBA” (to be announced) for both territories.
