Square Enix President States Dragon Quest XII Could Reflect Future of the Series

In an interview, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda stated that Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate could reflect the future of the series for the next ten to twenty years. Additionally, Matsuda shared that while parts of upcoming title will reflect the conventional image of the Dragon Quest series, innovation is essential in pushing the series forward. In May 2021, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest XII during the series’ 35th anniversary broadcast. The broadcast revealed that the “command battle system” would receive some changes. The battle system will be revamped for the upcoming title. However, that is all we know as any potential changes have yet to be revealed.

Additionally, Dragon Quest XII will have a darker story in comparison to previous entries. Details regarding the narrative are currently undisclosed, and more information will appear in the future. Outside of the initial announcement, and some bits of previously shared information, a potential release date is still unannounced. An archived version of the broadcast is currently available to view through the Square Enix YouTube channel. However, the broadcast is only available in Japanese.

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is currently in development. A release date and any potential platforms have yet to be revealed.
