By Square Enix has been developing Dive In, a streaming service similar to Gaikai or OnLive that brings games like Final Fantasy XIII to tablets and smartphones. Dive In was scheduled to launch on October 9 with Final Fantasy VII International, Final Fantasy XIII, and Season of Mystery: The Cherry Blossom Murders. After running tests, Square Enix decided to delay the service until a later, unannounced date.
That’s probably for the best. Siliconera played Final Fantasy XIII on a tablet connected to Dive In during Tokyo Game Show and this version of the game had lag issues.
All of Dive In’s games are rentals with prices as low as 150 yen (plus tax) to access Season of Mystery: The Cherry Blossom Murders for three days to 1,800 yen to access Final Fantasy XIII for 1,800 yen. Final Fantasy VII International is 200 yen for three days, 1,000 yen for 30 days and 1,429 yen for 365 days.
Square Enix planned on releasing Final Fantasy VII and The Last Remnant on Dive In in November. Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Murdered: Soul Suspect were originally slated for December. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is due next year. However, these release dates may change since players won’t Dive In until a later date.
