Nintendo released a new trailer for Splatoon 3, revealing some key information about the game’s single-player mode and a glimpse at a few of the game’s new gadgets and weapons. The game has a tentative Nintendo Switch release window of 2022.
Splatoon 3 will largely take place in Splatsville, also known as “The City of Chaos,” where most of the squid-people live. Like previous titles, the Inklings participate in ink-based turf wars in two teams of four players. The trailer shows one of the stages surrounded by the high-rise buildings of Splatsville, which is reportedly built up with each generation to give its distinctive look. We also see the appearance of several new weapons, such as a large crab-like tank that can roll around the stage and shoot ink.
The single-player story mode is titled “Return of the Mammalians.” As the title suggests, it will revolve around the return of mammals to the world of Splatoon. Due to rising seas, most mammals were considered extinct and squids became the dominant lifeform on Earth. They evolved over time and became the Inklings.
Other, darker forces may also be at play. The story mode’s level designs look large and varied, taking players from deserts to upside-down cities and more.
Splatoon 3 is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch. It is planned to release sometime in 2022.
