Sony has opened up a new production studio called PlayStation Productions, which will focus on utilizing their catalog of games for film and TV. [Thanks, Hollywood Reporter!]
The new studio, which is situated in Culver City at Sony Studios, is headed by Asad Qizilbash, and is being overseen by Sony Interactive Entertainment head Shawn Layden. According to Layden, “We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum.”
Qizilbash meanwhile explained that Sony felt that the better approach was to develop and produce adaptations themselves, not only because they’re more familiar, but also because they know better what the community likes.”
One thing they have been doing for the past few years has been talking to various people, trying to understand the industry. “We looked at what Marvel has done in taking the world of comic books and making it into the biggest thing in the film world. It would be a lofty goal to say we’re following in their footsteps, but certainly we’re taking inspiration from that,” mentioned Layden.
As for what title will be adapted to what medium, they said, this will depend on the story they want to tell. PlayStation Productions will have leeway on time, thanks to working with Sony Studios within Sony’s corporate umbrella. But Layden and Qizilbash confirmed that the first projects at PlayStation Productions are already in production.
