Sony Interactive Entertainment President John Kodera revealed on the PlayStation Blog today that cross-platform features are coming to the PlayStation 4. It will begin with the popular game that incited the controversy, Fortnite.

Starting today, there will be an open beta for Fortnite on PS4 that allows for cross-platform play, progression, and commerce with the Switch, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and mobile versions. According to Kodera, Sony sees the beta “as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.”

Kodera continued on to acknowledge that cross-platform play is now something of significant value to players nowadays, and mentioned that this marks a major policy shift for SIE. They are now in the planning process of implementing this across the company, and more details will be shared later, including what this means for other titles going forward.

Fortnite is currently available on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS and Android.
