Sony launched a new community feature for PS5 owners: PlayStation Tournaments. These officially sanctioned online tournaments will also award prizes to their winners. The details were revealed in a post on the PlayStation Blog. The first set of tourneys will involve Guilty Gear Strive, NBA 2K23, and FIFA 23.
Sony held what it calls “on-console” tournaments since 2016, but 2022 marks the day PlayStation Tournaments launch officially for the PS5. The official launch comes following three months of beta testing.
The first PlayStation Tournaments for PS5 will be open to the “global PS5 community,” and benefit from some new features. The new experience is “streamlined” from the PS4 era, with shorter tournament times, easy sign-up from the PS5 itself, and a new UI. Tournaments will also be easier to find, and have real-time updates. Sony also launched a Discord-based community hub for tournaments, accessible at this link.
Sony will celebrate the launch of PlayStation Tournaments on PS5 with what it’s calling the “Win-a-Thon” promotional event, too. From December 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023, players on both PS4 and PS5 can compete for leaderboard positions in tournaments, with prizes like cash, PS5 consoles, and controllers up for grabs.
In essence, it’s a meta-competition involving multiple PlayStation Tournaments. Participating players just need to make sure the “Win-a-Thon” badge on a given tournament card, then sign up and play in the tournament. Any successes will count towards the player’s position on a regional leaderboard. At the end of January 2023, all players with the most points will win prizes.
PlayStation Tournaments are available now on the PS5. The Win-a-Thon event kicks off from December 1, 2022 and runs through January 31, 2023. The games involved are Guilty Gear Strive, FIFA 23, and NBA 2K23.
