Something struck me while I was glancing over Sony’s playable games at Tokyo Game Show and this time it wasn’t Q Entertainment’s unannounced game. Half of the games being shown aren’t developed in Japan. The developers reside in the USA, Canada and Europe. And a fair number of the third party games like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Tony Hawk Project 8 are old news to the USA. The list highlights how Japanese developers aren’t readily jumping on the PS3 ship in the not so distant future, while US developers with multiplatform SKUs are. However, these games don’t readily go multiplatform in Japan. Spiderman 3, Transformers and Ratatouille do not have plans to release their games on the Xbox 360 too. To be fair there may not be enough Xbox 360’s in the wild to warrant a localized version of Ratatouille. But it is interesting how American developers and their Japanese publishing arm are backing Sony, a Japanese company, with Western IPs while ignoring Microsoft, an American company.
