Silent Hill is one of the most iconic series in video game history. The survivor horror elements of the titular town of Silent Hill are unmatched in their ability to surprise and terrify players. Though the series has just as many hits as it does misses, these are the best Silent Hill games we recommend players check out these days.

Note that I’m excluding the otherwise excellent P.T. from this best Silent Hill games list due to it being a teaser and not being playable in an official capacity. Hopefully, these games will help make the wait for new games like Silent Hill f a bit easier.

Scariest Silent Hill Game: Silent Hill 3

Silent Hill 3 follows the story of teenage girl Heather as she finds herself trapped in the town of Silent Hill. The third title in the franchise elevates its horror elements to an absurd level. Some of the creepiest monsters and most unnerving depictions of the town’s horrifying alternate reality exist here. Plus, it has some of the most disturbing imagery and story elements that will keep players up for nights.

Most Underrated Silent Hill Game: The Room

While reception was a bit mixed at its release, the fourth mainline game in the series has aged surprisingly well over time. I would go so far as to say it is now the most underrated game in the series. Its sinisterly narrow scope and dark story take risks that are more than worth taking.

Best Portable Silent Hill Game: Origins

While the core series focuses on console experiences, there are a couple of handheld experiences as well. Most of these are passable at best and horrifying to play for all the wrong reasons at worst. However, Origins feels like a true Silent Hill experience in handheld form with almost no concessions in its gameplay in the process. It was my first foray into the series, and its portable nature, coupled with the tighter focus, makes it a solid entry point for newcomers as well.

Best Silent Hill Game for Story and Characters: Silent Hill 2

For the overall most impressive immersive experience in the series, look no further than the acclaimed second title. There’s a reason this game is getting a remake. Silent Hill 2 features an unpredictable and emotional storyline about a man looking for his dead wife in a small town.

It balances everything so well, being just scary enough without overwhelming. It perfectly showcases the unique atmosphere of the town, introducing its iconic characters and monsters in a memorable tale.

Silent Hill f is currently in development and doesn’t yet have a release date announced.
