Bandai Namco and Granzella’s City Shrouded in Shadow releases today in Japan, and in commemoration, director Kazuma Kujo and producer Kensuke Tsukanaka held an interview on the concepts behind the game, as well as to tease the dramatic story that befalls the hapless protagonist. [Thanks, 4Gamer.]

4Gamer: Although the protagonist is just an ordinary human, they seem to lead quite the dramatic life.

Kazuma Kujo, director: “They meet way too many hardships in this game. (laughs)”

City in Shadows 2

Kensuke Tsukanaka, producer: “Although the protagonist is a normal person, they accidentally stumble onto a scene, ending up with them caught up in various incidents. To be honest as a developer, without this sort of element involved there would be no objective other than to run away from the monsters. The protagonist would just leave to the safest place, because getting close to Godzilla is dangerous. (laughs)”

Kujo: “The same Giant Shadow will not chase the protagonist beyond their own chapters. The story is set as a drama that takes place among the feet of the Shadows, and are not directly related.”

City in Shadows 3

Tsukanaka: “That’s exactly the case. However, for some reason Shadows keep appearing wherever the main character goes… I wonder why that is. (laughs)”

Kujo: “Even the people chasing after the protagonist are probably thinking, “Why do Shadows keep appearing whenever we follow you?””

4Gamer: That’s quite an interesting statement.

City Shrouded in Shadow is available today in Japan for PlayStation 4.
