Competitive shooters are the one genre that Nintendo don’t dabble in very much, but they’re doing it now with a game called Splatoon for the Wii U. Splatoon is a 4-on-4 team-based third-person shooter where the goal is to cover the arena with as much ink of your team’s colour as possible.
The ink isn’t just for show, though—it also affects gameplay. For example, you can spray walls with ink to access hard-to-reach areas. You can also “dive” into the ink to camouflage yourself or move faster, and covering more territory with ink unlocks weapons that can then be put to use to give the opposing team an even harder time.
Splatoon has been demonstrated several times by Nintendo throughout the course of this week during their E3 livestream, and you can watch one of these demonstrations above. The game is planned for release in the first half of 2015 and will include online multiplayer.
