The tease is over. D3 Publisher, which recently previewed a new project with a trailer that featured a maiden with a samurai sword, has officially announced its newest project. The aptly titled Samurai Maiden was unveiled alongside a new announcement trailer. The trailer shows off more Samurai Maiden gameplay and sets up its premise.
Samurai Maiden puts players in the high school uniform of Tsumugi Tamaori, an ordinary 21st-century girl. Tsumugi is forcibly transported several centuries into the past, waking up in a burning temple. That temple is Honno-ji, the famed temple where Sengoku-era warlord Oda Nobunaga was burned alive. To survive and find a way home, Tsumugi takes up a blade gifted to her by Nobunaga himself, cutting through crowds of supernatural baddies across the underworld.
The game is a fast-paced character action title. Tsumugi slashes at enemies, throwing them around with her blade and performing superhuman sword techniques. Samurai Maiden equips Tsumugi with her own squad, composed of three “Gokage” ninja. Iyo uses an arsenal of shinobi tools, Hagane is equipped with prosthetic weapons, and Komimi uses fearsome jutsu attacks. Tsumugi can call upon the Gokage’s abilities to form powerful combos and sweep the battlefield.
The game also has a romantic element. Tsumugi and her Gokage can build their relationships as they barrel through the underworld, unlocking new and powerful techniques. These techniques can be unleashed with a kiss.
Samurai MaidenĀ is in development for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It’s due out in Winter 2022. PS4 owners will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free.
