Koei Tecmo announced that its online game Samurai Cats will shut down on February 22, 2021. This will come after ten years of service in Japan. [Thanks, 4Gamer.]
Samurai Cats first launched in Japan on February 22, 2011. The game’s Japanese title is Nobunyaga no Yabou, which translates to “Nobunyaga’s Ambition.” The game was available in North America for beta testing in October 2012. Tecmo Koei Canada developed the English language version of the game, but the subsidiary shut down in March 2013, along with the game’s localization.
The social game is a spin-off of the turn-based strategy series Nobunaga’s Ambition. However, instead of Oda Nobunaga, you have Oda Nobunyaga. Other key figures made into feline mascots include the likes of Date Masiamune and Ishida Mitsunyari.
With Samurai Cats shutting down in Japan on February 22, 2021, that means it’ll end exactly ten years on the date from when it launched. Moreover, the February 22 date is national Cat Day in Japan. The 2/22 date is also known as “Nyan Nyan Nyan Day” in Japan. This comes from the Japanese word “Ni” (two) sounding like “Nyan” (Meow).
Samurai Cats is currently available for PC browsers, Android, and iOS devices. Those who play the game on iOS will receive refunds for any remaining Neko Coins.
