Run your own operating system on the Playstation 3

When Sony said the PS3 was a computer they weren’t kidding. Instead of discouraging running custom OSes on the system the Playstation 3 manual encourages users to do it. The Open Platform option lets you have the PS3 OS and whatever else you want to run. Naturally, Linux was the first choice and there are some great instructions online on how to get Fedora Core 5 on the Playstation 3. It takes a couple of hours of work, but if it isn’t that much compared to getting Linux on other consoles. What I’m interested in seeing is what the homebrew scene is going to do with this. We’re going to see custom PS3 OSes in the future, most are going to be for gaming or entertainment purposes, but the PS3 could be used for more. Maybe it could be part of a render farm or designed to scan genetic code for Alu elements. Or maybe someone will get real creative and make the PS3 levitate like it does in the Play B3yond commercials. The sky is the limit people, how far can you dream?
