Rumour: Final Fantasy Versus XIII Cancelled

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has either been cancelled or re-tooled into a different kind of game, according to a Kotaku report.

The game, which was originally debuted in trailer form in 2006, was cancelled in these past few weeks, according to one of the website’s “several” sources regarding the subject. Staff at Square Enix were reportedly “saddened” by the move.

Another source tells Kotaku that Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s development and resources have been folded into another game, which is purportedly going to be the next numbered Final Fantasy title. This same information was confirmed to the website by a third independent source as well. Both sources said that they learnt of this information prior to the game’s cancellation in its current form.

Just what aspects of Versus XIII’s development are being folded into this alleged new project is unknown. When Kotaku approached Square Enix to ask if Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still in development, they were told: “We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available.”

Meanwhile, Square Enix have announced that, at an upcoming Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event, they will share plans about the next Final Fantasy XIII project, which will focus on continuing FFXIII protagonist Lightning’s adventures.
