PS3 Still Lives With New System Update 4.87

PS3 System Update 4.78

Sony Interactive Entertainment just released a new system software 4.87 update for the PS3. Before you start dusting off your PS3, keep in mind that the firmware requires a minimum of 200 MB of free storage space on your hard drive or removable storage media (for a PC Update) to download.

Here’s a tweet about the system software version 4.87 update from PlayStation Japan’s official customer support Twitter account:

The announcement tweet didn’t detail any of the features found in the new firmware update, but it reminds PS3 owners to always keep their consoles up to date.

You can also manually download the PlayStation 3 System Software Update 4.87 on the official PlayStation website. It has a tiny patch note for the update that said, “This system software update improves system performance.”

While that doesn’t tell us much, the previous PS3 system software 4.86 update was released earlier in 2020 and with the same patch note. While it did add improvements to the system quality, it also removed the ability for PS3 users to communicate with other users on the PS4 and PS Vita.

The PlayStation 3 was first released in Japan on November 11, 2006. The console’s production run ended in May 2017.
