Pokémon producer Junichi Masuda appeared on today’s episode of the Pokénchi variety show today, and showed off how the Let’s Go set of games will replace HMs – hidden moves. [Thanks, Serebii!]
Hidden moves are one of the things that only your partner Pikachu or Eevee can do, and effectively replace the HM moves that were used in Kanto previously. The move replacing Cut is called ‘Kesa giri’ in Japanese, a reference to a diagonally-cutting sword technique, as opposed to ‘Iai giri’, which is Cut’s Japanese name.
As for Surf, using Surf with Pikachu will now use ‘Mizu bashiri’, meaning ‘Water Walk’ in Japanese. In effect though, Pikachu will summon a surfboard which the trainer will also ride, replacing the need for a Water-type Pokémon at all times.
Your Partner Pikachu or Partner Eevee can also learn special moves exclusive to them. Pikachu can learn the Water-type Splash Surf, which can cover for Pikachu’s weakness to Ground-types, and may also paralyze the opponent. Eevee can learn the Fire-type Flare Burn, which will always burn the opponent.
