Takara Tomy reported that Pokemon Mezastar is performing very well in Japan. The new arcade game recorded around 2.4 million tags in just a week after it launched on September 17, 2020. To put it another way, all players of the arcade game caught an average of 4 Pokemon per second within the first week. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]
Pokemon Mezastar is made by Takara Tomy and Marvelous as a successor to Pokemon Ga-Ole, which first launched in July 2016 and lasted for four years and two months. A Mezastar unit essentially combined two Ga-Ole cabinets to make it the first Pokemon arcade game that features co-op battles. Players battle against other Pokemon and catch them, resulting in the arcade game producing actual tags that can be collected.
The immensely popular feature in the new arcade game is the Special Tag Battle, where the two separate screens in a unit occasionally combine into one when there are two players on the unit. The intense co-op battles were enjoyed by not only a pair of friends or a parent and child, but also even by a random team of players who just happened to play on the same unit.
Takara Tomy also noted that the sales of merchandise related to Pokemon Mezastar are doing very well. The Mezastar Box, which is available at 1,100 yen and can store up to 24 tags along with a Memory Tag, was so popular it even sold out at several stores. A whopping 640% in increased sales was even recorded when compared to Pokemon Ga-Ole‘s storage item.
