PlayStation Store on PS3 and Vita Will Remain Open

Sony decided to backtrack on its decision to close the PS3 and Vita versions of the PlayStation Store. President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan took to the PlayStation Blog to say that when it came to the previously announced shutdown, “…it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here.”

Here’s the full explanation from Ryan as to why Sony decided to reverse the decision about PlayStation Store support for the PS3 and Vita. Originally, the PS3 version would have shut down on July 2, 2021 and the Vita one on August 27, 2021.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

However, it is important to note that one version of the PlayStation Store will be closing as scheduled. The announcement confirmed that the PSP version will be shuttered on July 2, 2021.

The PlayStation Store will remain open for the PS3 and Vita, but it will close for the PSP on July 2, 2021.
