PlayStation Discord Partnership Aims to Bring Easier Communication in 2022

PlayStation Discord Partnership

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that PlayStation will be partnering with the communication service, Discord. The partnership, announced via the Sony Interactive Entertainment blog, includes a quote from CEO Jim Ryan. He states that the two companies are working together to bring something to consoles and mobile devices by early 2022.

Additionally, Sony revealed that it now holds a minority investment stake in Discord, after participating in its Series H round of funding. While more news will come in the following months, Jim Ryan stated that teams at both Sony and Discord are already working on connecting the communication software with the PlayStation Network.

Specific features that will be implemented such as voice chat capability or streaming have not been mentioned. However, the blog post states that the new partnership will allow friends and communities to communicate “more easily” while playing games.

Discord compatibility with gaming consoles has been a frequently recurring topic. Back in May 2019, the official Discord Twitter also mentioned the possibility of a Nintendo Switch App, with the caveat that it would require “Nintendo’s blessing.” Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S users already have the ability to use the service on consoles by linking the two accounts. However, users are only able to see each others activity, and chat functions are not available.

More news about the partnership will be released in the next few months.
