Persona 4 Doesn’t Need a Remake

Persona 3 Reload, the latest remake from Atlus, has been devoured by fans and critics alike. However, just because a Persona 3 remake turned out well, that doesn’t necessarily mean we need one for Persona 4, right?

Persona 4 Golden is still more than playable

Until Persona 3 Reload, there was really no definitive way to play Persona 3. Even Persona 3 Portable, with its many additions, had limitations, such as removing overworld traversal. Persona 3 Reload was necessary to update Persona 3 to a fully playable state on modern consoles. However, Persona 4 doesn’t have that problem, as its definitive version can be bought today for just $20.

The game just doesn’t have a lot of the age on it that Persona 3 did. With Persona 3, they were moving from one style of game to a completely different one, and because of that, there were some growing pains that made the groundbreaking RPG dated in certain design aspects. Some of those issues, by the way, the remake didn’t even fix!

If I handed a copy of Persona 4 Golden to anyone in 2024, I think they could maybe nitpick about a few things, but overall, it’s just as playable as your average JRPG would be. Sure, the character models aren’t as flashy and showy as the ones in Persona 5 or Persona 3 Reload, but is that really a dealbreaker? Do I want a whole new game just to have the same experience look a little better?

Technically, Golden was a remake anyway. The definitive edition already helped modernize the game greatly. Sure, there are a few quality-of-life features missing in regard to Persona Fusion, but I don’t think they’re that severe. Persona 4 Golden is like the Chrono Trigger of its era. Like, yeah, it’s clearly from a different time, but it plays today just fine.

Now, with all that said, I would absolutely buy any and all Persona 4 remakes Atlus decides to make. Also, I think that if they make one, it’ll be great, just like Persona 3 Reload. However, all I’m saying here is, why not remake something we all want, Atlus, like Shin Megami Tensei IV?

What do you think? Do you want a Persona 4 remake, or would you rather see Atlus tackle something else?

Persona 4 Golden is currently available on PlayStation 2, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
