Paper Mario: The Origami King Will Have an Open World to Explore

Paper Mario: The Origami King

In a recent interview, Nintendo Producer Kensuke Tanabe talked about some of the systems in Paper Mario: The Origami King. Part of this included how the game is less restrictive, in terms of exploration, thanks to it including an open world this time around. [Thanks, Game Informer!]

As for how the open world works, essentially the chapter-based setup of past Paper Mario games has been replaced with seamless exploration from region to region, all in search of the five streamers which also handily act as your waypoints. There are also several methods of transportation aside from walking, including a boot-shaped car, a boat, and possibly even an airship. Along the way, you’ll find secret creased Toads who are waiting to be rescued, and some of them may end up staring a shop in Toad Town.

There was also some talk about the partner characters in the interview. Tanabe clarified that, while King Olly’s sister Olivia is a constant companion, the others will be a shuffling cast. You won’t be able to swap between them freely via the menu. Most of the “partners” are based on common Super Mario series enemies; it will also feature Bowser Jr. on his quest to help his dad out as well.

Paper Mario: The Origami King will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 17, 2020. In case you missed it, previous reports went over what the battle system looks like.
