Palworld Beginners’ Tips for Getting a Base, Resources, and Pal Spheres

Palworld is a game that could be frustrating for new players. With so few resources available to the player at the start, beginners are likely to need some tips when they take their first steps into Palworld and start preparing a base and Pal Spheres.

At the start of Palworld, you begin with nothing. You don’t even have any clothes, besides a few rags for modesty. This makes you vulnerable to the elements, weak in fights, and limited when it comes to gathering resources. However, there are ways to overcome these difficulties with careful planning.

Decide on your Palworld base location early

The location of your base in Palworld is important, as it can affect how you build up your resources and how easily you can defend your home from attacks. While the in-game tutorial doesn’t allow you to place a base immediately, it’s worth deciding on a location before doing anything else. It’s also something to decide on before placing your workbench, as you won’t be able to move that later.

Ideally, the base needs to include some resources that can be easily accessed. Find an area with some trees and some large mining rocks. Once you’ve built up your base and collected some Pals, this will allow you to easily replenish your Wood and Stone resources. When Pals with the right skills assigned to the base, they will automatically pull these resources as long as they’re inside the base.

The base location also needs to be easy to defend. Look for a high spot somewhere that will require any enemies to climb. This will also make it easier to see threats and be able to attack them once you have access to ranged weapons.

Build up your Palworld resources

At the start of the game, you have nothing, but you will need to be able to craft a lot of necessary tools quickly. One of the best tips for Palworld beginners to grab a decent supply of Wood and Stone. Fortunately, you can find these lying around on the ground. If you’re struggling to find any Wood, you can also punch some trees to get some. Punching rocks is also possible, but the rate that Stone drops this way is low.

Ideally, you’ll need to collect a minimum of 12 Wood and 10 Stone, allowing you to build a Primitive Workbench, followed by a Stone Pickaxe and a Stone Axe. If you can get an additional 10 Wood and 10 Stone for a Repair Bench, do this too, as you’ll need this as soon as possible too.

Once you have these, use the Pickaxe and Axe to build up your supplies of Wood and Stone. By mining rocks for Stone, you’ll also be able to build a small supply of Paldium Fragments, which you’ll need for the Palbox for a base. You’ll also need these for making Pal Spheres. You may need to build a Wooden Chest to store these resources too, so place this next to your bench.

Use Pals for resources first in Palworld

When you first load up the game, it’s tempting to jump straight into catching some Pals. However, Pal Spheres require Paldium Fragments which are harder to come by at the start of the game. In addition, Pals also require their own resource management to care for, and at the start of the game you can barely care for yourself.

Instead, beginners to Palworld would be best treating their first Pal encounters as hunts. You’ll want to hunt down some Lamballs and Chikipis which are likely to be wandering around in your immediate vicinity. By defeating these Pals, you will be able to get Wool and meat, which will lead you gaining clothes and food. You’ll likely need to build a Campfire before your first night in Palworld, so having meat on hand means you can cook it and gain a substantial boost to your hunger meter over simple berries.

If you don’t like being huddled by a campfire every night, building up a stockpile of Wool early on is useful. You won’t be able to make clothes straight away but levelling up enough to unlock the Cloth Outfit on the tech tree is something you should be focusing on. With a stockpile of Wool, you can make clothes as soon as you unlock the recipe, making the game less frustrating.

Stock up on Pal Spheres

If all the previous tips have been followed, beginners to Palworld can easily get themselves settled into their base with minimal stress. This allows players to focus on the fun stuff – gathering Pals.

The best time to begin catching Pals rather than just hunting them is when you’re able to build a small stockpile of Pal Spheres. I’d recommend 10 Pal Spheres as a decent starting point. You’re likely to throw a few by accident while learning how to catch, so having a few spares is useful. To make these 10, you will need 30 Wood, 30 Stone and 10 Paldium Fragments.

Once you have a few Spheres, don’t be afraid to catch a few of the same type for EXP bonuses. If you can get a few Pals working on your base quickly, you won’t need to focus on gathering resources as much. My recommendation is catching a few Cattivas early on, as they have the Mining skill.

Palworld will release on January 19, 2024 in Early Access for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
