A whole new world of One Piece media is about to arrive. But, it’s one that has actually been acknowledged and known about since 2017. Finally, the full announcement is here. A live-action One Piece Netflix series is on the way. No dates have been set, but creator Eiichiro Oda posted a notice in multiple languages on its official Twitter account.
Oda’s full message is as follows:
I know I announced the production of this back in 2017, but these things take time! Preparations have been slowly progressing behind the scenes, and it seems that I can finally make the big announcement: Netflix, the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, will be lending us their tremendous support! This is so encouraging!! How far will the story progress over the 10 episodes of season 1? Who will be cast!? Please be patient a little longer and stay tuned!!
The tweet itself does offer a little bit of insight. Oda is involved with the One Piece live-action series and will provide insight into it. Steven Maeda, who was a producer on CSI: Miami, Lie to Me, and Lost, will be the showrunner and executive producer for it. Matt Owens, who previously wrote Luke Cage, will be writing it.
Netflix has been involved with multiple live-action adaptations of animes. In 2018, it was behind the Bleach movie with Sota Fukushi, Hana Sugisaki, and Miyavi. It also announced a Cowboy Bebop series in 2018. John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Danielle Pineda, and Alex Hassell will be in it. (We’ve also seen Ein.)
The live-action One Piece Netflix series is in development.
